Lulu is a helper.
She is wanting to help with everything. And I mean everything.
She has always considered herself a Masterchef, but is now wanting to help with meals and if she had it her way would be in charge of the gas cooktop.
So last weekend we made Sausage rolls. Or as she likes to call them, party rolls.
Homemade Sausage Rolls
Ingredients:
2 Cups of Sausage Mince
2 Cups of Beef Mince
2 Cups of Breadcrumbs
2 Cups of Warm Water
1 x chicken stock cube
1/3 Cup of Onion Granules
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
Puff Pastry - Approximately 6-7 sheets
2 Eggs
Method:
Mix all the ingredients, except the pastry and eggs, you can add other vegetables if you want to sneak them in. e.g. carrots, zuchini.
Note: I use onion granules instead of fresh onions, in keeping with my 'lazy cooking' I really can't be bothered having to finely chop or grate a real onion. Plus they make me cry and that is bloody annoying!
(This was her first time using a 'sharp knife', it's all about being grown up right now)
Cut each piece of Puff Pastry in half. Then you'll need to place enough meat mixure on each piece and roll the meat out into a 'log'.
Beat eggs in a bowl and then brush pastry with egg mix. Fold over pastry ensuring all meat mixture is covered and resembles a log.
Cut into desired lengths. We usually get 5 sausage rolls from each log.
Place on oven tray covered in baking paper, brush tops of sausage rolls with egg mix.
Cook in oven at 180C for approx. 20 minutes or until golden.
Do your children like to cook? What some of their favourite recipes that you'd recommend for Lulu (aged 6).
I'm linking up with Jess from Diary of a SAHM for Proud Mummy Moments. I'm proud of how independent this little girl is and how motivated she is to cook and in general learn. I mean how good do those sausage rolls look!

Yum! I love homemade sausage rolls and have been looking for a nice recipe. Nice tip on the onion granules too :)
ReplyDeleteOh Mandy I think your Lulu and my Allana are kindred spirits...she loves to cook and help with everything...she also has a secret ingredient she adds to her meals she cooks?? Nothing beats homemade sausage rolls or party rolss yummo xx
ReplyDeleteYay - love this - i have been wanting to make sausage rolls for ages - will try this one with the kids!
ReplyDeletemy just-turned-7 year old loves to make individual pizzas (we make heaps and freeze them so she has a quick dinner or school lunch)
I'll have to try this. But what are onion granules Mands?
ReplyDeleteOnion Granules can be found in the herb section. They're basically little dried up pieces of onion and you just shake it into your mixture. Provides flavour, the kids aren't trying to pick the onion out because it's not much bigger than bread crumbs, and you don't have to worry about stinky fingers or crying from trying to cut an onion super small.
DeleteThey look awesome! Oh u must be proud! I haven't given my kids that much independence in the kitchen for a little while, but I really should. She is having a ball! :)
ReplyDeletewant!
ReplyDeleteBoo (who functions at around the 4 year old level) learnt how to make tacos at school. He loves it! Sure he makes a mess and needs some help with browning and draining the mince but it is so cute watching him assemble them for everyone.
I love tacos, unfortunately my kids look at them and I think they just don't believe it's a meal. Maybe I should get them to make it and they might be a bit more enthusiastic. thanks for the idea.
DeleteOh yum, they look so delicious! I'm going to save your recipe and try it myself. Mine love to help me cook and bake too, it's such a great and important skill for them to learn. Your little one is adorable!
ReplyDeleteSounds delicious, My little boy is only 18months but already starting to get into the kitchen with me. I can't wait to do even more cooking with him.
