As Mothers Day is approaching, I've been thinking about what I'd like (gift wise). #first world problems.
I've shared with you some awesome finds, if you dont' know what you'd like or you're stuck for ideas for your own mother. As well as what I really really want.
And then I was told about the 'Safe Mothers and Baby Appeal'.
I know it can seem overwhelming with so many charitable causes all worthy of your support. And I'll be honest and say I often tell people 'I'm sorry I've already donated to another cause this month' because so many people need your help.
I'm by no means rich, but I'm bloody grateful that I get by and aren't one of these people in desperate need of assistance and so I do my bit to try and help others.
Having learnt so much about the needs of mothers and children in Africa courtesy of Edens recent trip this certainly caught my eye.
This Mothers Day, Australia for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s charity in Australia, is launching a Safe Mother & Baby Appeal with special lifesaving gift packages that can be bought and sent to women in refugee camps around the world, on behalf of Australian mothers, daughters and sons.
A woman in Somalia today is 150 times more likely to die in childbirth than a woman in Australia. In fact, over the course of her childbearing years, a Somali mother has a staggering one in 14 chance of dying of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
That’s why UNHCR are asking Australians to join together this Mothers’ Day and do something special – to buy an emergency survival gift for a new refugee mother and help us create the biggest relief package the world has ever seen.
Gift packages include:
· Clean Delivery Kits
$26 can buy 10 kits containing an instruction sheet, cotton baby wrap, soap, plastic sheeting, a clean blade and string for the umbilical cord
· Midwife Pack
$53 can provide drugs, sterile dressings and other supplies for midwives
· New Mother Packs
$100 can provide nutritional supplements, baby blankets, baby clothes, and soap for 20 pregnant women
· Emergency Health Kit
$1044 can purchase an Emergency Health Kit to meet the complete medical needs of up to 5000 refugees for one month.
To purchase a Mother’s Day gift package visit www.
worldsbiggestpackage.com or phone Australia for UNHCR on 1300 361 288. A printable gift card is provided for each donation, which is tax deductible.
In a bid to show my support I am pledging $26 toward 10 Clean Delivery Kits. I spent 6 weeks in hospital 'keeping safe' awaiting the arrival of my first baby. Imagine not having that support or medical facilities.
I'm not saying don't enjoy Mother's Day, enjoy every minute of it, be grateful, love, smile, laugh, but think, is there something you can do to assist those who just want to survive?

This sounds like a great initiative. Thanks for sharing Mandy.
ReplyDeleteI love this charity & have actually donated to them a few times. I think it's amazing that these poor women are still experiencing childbirth in this way while we sit there thinking about birthing pools & what music to have playing while we're giving birth!
