This week we celebrated Tom's 5th Birthday. We celebrated with a Mario Brothers Cake.
Make a cake, buy a pre-made sponge, the option is yours.
I did a bit of both.
I used:
1 Pre-made Sponge
1 Vanilla Cake Packet Mix
2 tubs of Vanilla Frosting
Food Colouring
A Skewer
Chocolate Icing Pen
We already had a Mario Brothers Figurine, so just gave it a bit of a clean.
Method:
I made the packet mix cake first. The reason I did this was because I wanted to make a specific shaped cake to suit the top of the mushroom. I used a steamed pudding tin. However stuck to the original baking instructions.
Then I allowed it to cool.
In the mean time I separated the frosting into different bowls and coloured accordingly.
The pre-made sponge had two layers. I iced one layer in green to represent grass.
Then using the lid of the frosting container, I cut two circles out of the second layer.
I stacked these, one on top of the other with a little frosting in between. Then placed them on the cake in position. I completely covered them in white frosting.
When the cake I baked had cooled I placed it onto the stem of the mushroom. I did at this point put a skewer through the layers of the mushroom to ensure they wouldn't fall apart or slide off.
I then covered the top of the mushroom with red icing. Once it had set I added the white dots.
I placed the figurine on the base along with five candles.
Note: I added eyes to the mushroom using the chocolate icing pen.
A Mario Brother Birthday Cake was a huge hit for my little 5 year old.
Cheers
