HLS [WK13] - Checking In!

This week in the HLS Challenge Deb has suggested we ‘check in’.  It’s time to review our goals from week six and ensure that we didn’t just put them on the book shelf never to be seen again.
I’ll admit I haven’t been opening reviewed these goals on a regular basis or anything, but they’re built in me, my desire to move forward in life and as a result, moving forward I have been.
So here is a snippet as to how I’m tracking with my 2012 Goals:
Career:  I have been thinking a whole lot about this lately.  I’ve thought about what I could do, what I could do that is realistically going to provide for my family.  I’ve thought a lot.
I have sent emails regarding courses and now need to really stop.  Stop and thoroughly read all the finer details, review the probability of work options, then decide if I want to move forward.
But I have definitely been ‘reviewing’ this.  It is a step forward.
Money: Our budget is not too healthy at the moment and the reality is I can tighten the belt.  I don’t have to have everything, my kids don’t need to do everything.  I talked about the fine line of wanting to provide a good life and teaching my children values.
I don’t feel it’s practical for me to have a ‘no spend month’.  Sometimes you just need to spend money, sometimes your kids need warmer uniforms, but sometimes you don’t need that new cardi, or that take out dinner.  I need to draw a line in the sand.  It’s a focus for April.
Health: If you read this blog you’ll know that this has been a major focus for me this year.  I’ve lost 8 kilos and I’m feeling fitter and healthier.  I can’t tell you the last time I ate chocolate and I have no desire to do so.
I am not a health junkie, there is still plenty of room for improvement.  I’m still focused on my running and mastering this, so whilst I stoked with my progression to date, this is a life long project.  But I probably don’t need to put so much mind space into it now, I can probably sit on auto pilot now that I’ve created good habits.
Family and Friends: I’ve been quite social this year.  In fact I’ve worked hard (not that hard is the right word) but created time for friends.  I probably need to find a balance now.  I’m not 21 and would not be able to maintain the level of socialising I’ve been doing.  Balance!  At least I know I can make time for friends, as well as spend quality time with my family, I just need to make sure I don’t burn myself out or anyone else in the family for that matter.
Relationships:  I already had a good relationship with my husband.  Tag team parenting does take it’s toll, along with tag team socialising.  We’ve made a decision to do stuff together occasionally and get a baby sitter.  No point living completely separate lives.
Personal Growth:  My own personal growth has been a little slower.  I know why this is, because, it always comes last.  I have started reading my first book for the year, but better get a move on, the pile to read is quite high.
I’m developing my blog further, attending the digital parents conference as we speak.
Now if only I could find the time to take photos.  (OK I hear you saying ‘What the, doesn’t she take like a billion photos already).  But I’m talking great photos, manual photos, photos where I’ve stopped and thought about what I’m doing.  I’ve accumulated a new flash and lens and haven’t even really had a chance to play with it.  My birthday was back in January, that’s a long time sitting on the shelf.
But you know what, you can’t focus on everything all the time.  Focusing on a couple of things at a time is a good idea.  I’ve certainly made some progress and look forward to what the rest of the year holds.
I’m looking forward to taking some time to recoup in the school holidays, visit some very good friends locally and further afield and enjoy life, starting this weekend.
Cheers

Moments in time

I have moments in time that I remember, that I’ll always remember.
Like it happened yesterday.
Last week my Grandpa would have been 80.
My brother posted on Facebook that he didn’t really remember him, but he wish he could.
And then as we all jotted down the things that we did remember, we realised, including him that we did remember things, but in the day to day of life, it parks itself in the back corner of our minds.
I guess that’s what I kind of love about having a blog.
I write...... so some of those ‘small things’ that I’d probably most certainly forget about, will in fact never be forgotten.
The things my kids said or did, the things I wouldn’t think to tell them, they’ll know.
The things we did together, they won’t remember everything, I don’t record everything, but they will remember, they have a chronological path to follow right here.
My thoughts and feelings, who I am, when I’m old and different, maybe no longer around, they’ll know.
They’ll have an insight into how I actually was, who I am now.
So below is a random collection of ’10 things I remember’ just because... I do.
1/ It seems only fitting that I start with my Grandpa, I remember gathering for family holidays (Easter / Christmas) and Grandpa setting up his table and chairs under the annex of his caravan in the backyard.  I remember we’d all huddle around that area like it was the place to be.  We’d laugh at jokes and just enjoy being together.
2/ I remember moving to the country town I grew up in when I was six.  I don’t really remember much of my life before then.  I don’t even really remember the move.  But I do remember being in my front yard and meeting a neighbour who would go on to be my best friend for the greater part of primary school.
3/ I remember riding my bike on my first day of high school.  Anxious that my mum said I couldn’t go to the other high school where all my friends were going.  I was the only girl from my primary school going to this school.  But as I rode up that bike path I made a new friend or two, who became some of my closest friends through high school and beyond.
4/ I remember a family moving to town, they were right into basketball.  They encouraged me to join, took me under their wing.  I was never going to be as good as them, but with their dad as our coach and their support and guidance, basketball was definitely a loved sport for me growing up.
5/ I remember finally getting a microwave after years of everyone having one.  Living in a single parent family, it wasn’t on our list of priorities, (or my mum’s list of priorities), so when someone down the road was upgrading from dial to press button, mum bought their old one, second hand for a steal.
6/ I also remember dragging the cord of my family telephone through the hallway and under my bedroom door, so I could talk to my girlfriends, (who I’d seen all day) for hours on end.  I had to sit on the floor and lean up against the door because that is as far as the cord would reach and occasionally, someone would trip over it and pull the cord out of the socket.  Was such a pain!
7/ I remember going to see La Bamba on the big screen at the local town hall.  We didn’t have a cinema in our town.
8/ When I was in year 12 McDonalds opened in a neighbouring town.  It was still a ½ hour drive away, but you were guaranteed to run into at least a dozen people you knew if you made the trip.  Prior to this McDonalds was a treat we got when we went to stay with my dad in Melbourne during school holidays. To be honest I didn’t even like it that much!
9/ I remember my driving instructor telling me after he congratulated me on getting my license, that he feared for people like me and hoped that nothing bad happened to me.  Seriously!  I stalled the car down the main street and then tried to start it when it was already running, that is all.  I know that he was just peeved off that I had refused to pay for more lessons but demanded to sit the test.
10/ I remember how loved I felt when some of my good friends arranged a going away party for me prior to my overseas trip.  When people make an effort to do something to make you feel special, well .... it makes you feel pretty darn special.
So that is it for today.  I guess I won’t ever have to worry about tripping over the cord when Lulu is talking to her friends.  I’ll be too busy monitoring her mobile phone bill and Facebook account or who knows what by then.
What’s a really random thing that you know you’ll never forget even if it might feel insignificant to some?
Cheers

Sibling Love

Nope they're not twins, even though a stranger will ask me at least once a week.

But they are very very close.

This week we pulled out the mattress in Lulu's room so they could be together.

Easter Crafts ~ Cello Style Easter Eggs

This craft all came because Lulu has a new little buddy in prep and he made her this gorgeous picture.

She probed as to how he did it and it got me thinking, she'd love this activity, but how could I put another spin on it.

Enter Cello Style Easter Eggs

I created a picture of an egg. Just an out line.

I pre-cut it.

Then we folded it in half vertical.

Following this, she cut out some shapes.  The purpose of the fold is then evident as the shapes are mirrored on both sides.

We cut out bits of coloured cello (you may prefer to do this at 'setup')

To adhere the cello to the egg, we rolled glue across one whole side of the egg and stuck down bits of cello ensuring they covered all gaps.

Allow 10 minutes to dry and then laminate to seal.

Lulu then cut the laminate to maintain the egg shape.

 # Note the clean up... not too bad really?

Stuck on the window (or sliding door in our case), the eggs act in the same way as a lead light, illuminating as the sun shines through.

And don't assume if you've got a little one that they can't do 'something'.  Zander was in his element working away on his very own masterpiece.

Cheers

HLS [WK12] - Dealing with Change

I've been working on simplifying my life.

Sometimes as I run around like a crazy woman I wonder if I've changed anything.

But I know that I'm only at the beginning of my journey and I still have a long way to go.

I'm creating routine.  Habits.

Six months ago I didn't think I could afford to join the gym.

But then I decided, it was a priority.

This year as I struggled to 'find time' I decided to invest further and utilise the creche.

Now I have routine.

This first term of school has been about adapting and not just for Lulu.

The routine is not yet flawless.  But my goal is to get to the gym 3 mornings a week.

This means that come the weekend if I don't feel like going, or I don't have time, it's OK.

As I review who I am and what my values are, I've identified what is important to me.

I know to a degree to be a good mother, I need to be happy and be kind to me.

I also know that when you spend the week, tag team parenting you need to have quality time to make it work.

These last couple of weeks I've felt like it's all starting to fall through the cracks a little.

Too much too little time.

I'm grateful that the school holidays are almost upon us and it will allow us time to regroup.

Making changes..... it's a long term project.

Mentally I'm getting there.  What my expectations of myself are and in turn what my expectations of everyone else is also.

If you are in the right frame of mind, everything else is within reach.

Regards

Mandy.

A Racing Car Birthday Cake

To help celebrate Zander's Birthday I decided to make him a racing car themed birthday cake.

I'll admit I went to the Internet for inspiration, but not in the ordinary Pinterest kinda way.  I asked the readers at Lovely Living for ideas.  They were full of fun, creative and exciting ideas.  Thanks Ladies.

It was through this conversation that I came up with this:

Because, if you didn't know by now I'm a bit of a lazy cook, and definitely not winning any medals for my baking, I opted to buy a pre-made sponge.  It also had something to do with having to work 8 hours the day/night before and being on Canteen duty on the day of his birthday that made it less inspiring. lol.

So anyways....

I used:

A pre-made Sponge
Betty Crocker Frosting
Food Dye
A Chocolate Frosting pen
Milky Ways
Smarties
Tiny Teddies

First up I dyed some of the frosting green.  I then covered one of the two sponge cakes with the green frosting. This is designed to resemble grass!  Don't you think?

Then I cut out a number two with the second tier cake.  I placed this on top of the green covered one and proceeded to cover it with vanilla frosting.  As this is designed to resemble a road, I used the chocolate frosting pen to create road markings.

Finally I used the milky ways to create cars.  To do this I melted a small amount of chocolate (which I had in the cupboard) and stuck four smarties on each milky way to resemble wheels.  Then in the top of the milky way cut a small slit and insert a tiny teddy.  Remember I made them for Halloween last year.

I'm pretty happy with the overall outcome.  Given that I pre-bought all the ingredients, I'm sometimes left questioning why I bother.  But deep down I know, I'm creating memories that I hope my children will look back on fondly.

Cheers

Grateful for my Baby

Not that his much of a baby any more.  Now that his 2!

I'm really truly grateful for my little man Zander.

I think I'm grateful for him because he was such a choice.  I mean I chose to have all my children, but in my heart I was always going to have children. Not a child, but children.  Which meant that Lulu and Tom were a given.

But then Zander, he was a choice, he was a burning desire on my heart to complete our family.

Best decision ever.

We had a little celebration at home for his birthday, just the five of us.

I love that he is so independent and social.  He'll have a chat to anyone and some of his first words were "Bye, see ya"

I love that he is so caring of others, only today he was following his little buddy after she'd fallen down saying "you kay, you kay"

I love that he is always so busy.  He rarely walks, but runs.

I love that he can talk so much, he is a really really good talker.

I love that he is such a copy cat.  He can be found following his big brother around the house doing and saying everything straight after him.

I love his blonde curls and his goofy smile.

I could go on and on and on.  But clearly I love him and I'm so grateful that he completes our family.  And despite the fact that I'm writing this, I know that Rod, Lulu and Tom are pretty bloody grateful too.

What are you grateful for this week?  Why not pop over to Kidspot and see what everyone is grateful for too.

I'm linking up with Maxabella loves at Kidspot 52 Weeks of Grateful.

Cheers

Easter Crafts ~ Hand Stitched Easter Bunny

Lulu is always wanting to keep busy, she loves to craft, and loves a themed project.

So I thought the time was right to introduce her to hand stitching.

We started by finding an image.  We printed off an outline of a rabbit.

I placed some fabric in a hoop. Using a special transfer pen (which washes off with water) I traced the image onto the fabric.

Then she got to work, stitching away.  It probably took her the good part of an hour.

It's not perfect, as you'd expect for a first timer, or for a six year old.  But from where I'm standing it's just gorgeous.

I just used a wet face washer, dabbing it on the image to remove the blue pen.

Following this I trimmed the fabric to resemble a circle.

We decided we'd turn her masterpiece into a cushion.

I sourced some fabric from my stock and cut out two matching squares.

I sewed the circle onto one piece of the cushion.

Then with right sides together, I sewed around the edges, leaving a small opening.

Following this, I turned it in the right way and stuffed it.

Then hand stitched the small gap.

I'll be honest and tell you I didn't have the right filling for the cushion, but due to the pressure to have this finished in time for show and tell, we used wadding.  So it's a little lumpy, but Lulu doesn't mind, she's wrapped.

Now the big question will be to leave it out all year round or only at Easter?

I'll leave that up to Lulu.

Cheers

The See Saw

Parenting, there is so much to learn, most of it as you go.

And it makes me wonder, how do we avoid the mistakes?

I understand that mistakes make us stronger, mould us into who we are, but how do we ensure we make the best parenting decisions to bring out the best in our children?

I battle with the decisions I need to make and like parenting to that of a see saw.

At one end you have desire.  The desire to bring happiness into your child's life, fulfilment, satisfaction.  The desire to provide for them, and provide more than just things, but love.

However tugging at you from the other end is responsibility, What are your responsibilities as a parent beyond giving your child what they think they want.  Allowing them to understand disappointment, experience frustration.

And whilst I often liken parenting to that of a juggling act, I'm now realising there is no middle ground on a see saw.  One minute you're up, then the next minute you're down.

How do you teach your children humility, without depriving them so much so that later in life that is all they remember and they rebel against everything you stood for?

How do you teach them that what they have is enough, if those they are surrounded by are given more?

Where is the handbook people?

Or should I just run with it and deal with the consequences later?

I'm not a new mum, I've been at this game now for six years, but I ask, if you could give someone one parenting tip, what would it be?

Cheers

Food Patrol 90 Day Challenge: I've improved my health, now to focus on fitness!

Running...

I've wanted to master it for so long now, I've often felt like a bit of a failure.

I run, I walk, but I never seem to progress.

I really just couldn't work out why.

Why was I so weak, that I couldn't push through the barrier?

But then Kate from Kate Says Stuff posted this on her blog:

"When chatting with Sara this week on twitter she mentioned that running is running, even when you are barely shuffling."

Don't you love that about blogging, Sara helped Kate turn a corner and she has now paid it forward by helping me.

I realise now that in fact I was sabotaging myself.  I was using the manual settings on the treadmill at the gym because it was easy.  I thought if that is the settings it must be what you should use.

I was running at 9km per hour and then walking at 6km per hour.

9km per hour, it's just too fast for me.  I struggle to keep up, I survive the minute and I need a minute to walk.  9km per hour is probably too fast when you're learning to run.

With this power of knowledge under my belt I headed to the gym, I set the treadmill to 7.5km per hour.  I was jogging.

And I was able to keep going.  I was jogging for 10 minutes, then walking for 2.

Also because it is a manual setting, it is not as simple to flick back and forth, as a result I'm pushing myself.

I walked away from the gym that bloody proud of myself.

I broke new ground.

Over the last 12 months I've been trying to run and only this week I've worked out how.

I know I will train now, I know I will improve.  Because I am not being too hard on myself, I am not sabotaging myself.

I'm going to start that positive talk, because I now believe.

Thanks Kate, thanks Sara, this is a massive step for me.

See I told you I had so much to be grateful for this week!

Now onto the food side of it, I also had a win, I broke through the 60 mark.

I now weigh: 59.5kg

Starting weight:    67.8kg
End wk 1:            63.4kg
End wk 2:            62.9kg
End wk 3:            62.4kg
End wk 4:            61.8kg
End wk 5:            61.3kg
End wk 6:            61kg
End wk 7:            61kg
End wk 8:            60.5kg

I feel like I've mastered the food thing, I don't have nagging desires to eat rubbish.  And on the odd occasion I do feel like something I don't beat myself up about it because I'm in control.

Now to master this running caper, which I will......

Cheers

A Boys Best Friend

Last weekend we venture to my folks farm.

I was going to go on about how I got stuck in traffic, and it took me an hour longer than usual.

I was going to go on about how much fun the kids had swimming in the pool.

I was going to go on about the market we went to.

I was going to go on about the fact that despite all the fun, the kids still drove me crazy on the drive home.

But I won't.

Because something happened 1 hour after we left the farm.

Diesel, my youngest brothers 'best mate' (his loyal dog)  got bitten by a snake.

You see my brother (who is 13 years old) he is a farmer, it's in his blood.

All his life he needed his mate, his own dog, because that's what farmers do.

Diesel was stubborn and when he saw a snake at the gate he barked and barked and barked.

When my brother went to check out what all the fuss was about, he headed back to the house to get something to deal with the snake.

But it was too late, he heard a yelp and he knew.

Upon return Diesel had killed the snake, but the damage was done.

My brother looked after his mate, tended to his needs, but then he recovered, or so it seemed.

He was racing around and back to full spirit.

But the next day, unfortunately it was not meant to be.

RIP

HLS [WK 11] - Choosing to be Grateful

I'm feeling extremely grateful this week.

This time last year I jumped in and blogged, my first ever post.

I wasn't sure, I'd pondered the idea for a while and finally faced my fears, you know:

Would anyone even read it?

Would anyone even like it?

I told myself I'd blog for me, that it's a personal blog and if no one else read it, it really didn't matter.  And to a degree, I still maintain this.

But I do promote my blog, through link ups, guest post etc, because I love having people to talk to.  I love that my little space like home, actually does feel like home.

I love that people comment and I love that I can now comment back.  I love the feeling of community.

So thank you, for joining me here.  I'm really grateful.

Check out our 1st Anniversary Celebrations

All the kids had to have a turn of blowing out the candles!

This photo makes my heart melt!

Thanks to Custom Icing for supplying the super cool Edible Cake Toppers.

-x-

The thing about being grateful is, it's easy to do or be grateful, when things are going right.

But I don't always feel that way, I have bad days, when I'm down in the dumps and I do sometimes find it difficult to be grateful.

It's something I'm working on, that's partly what this journey with Home Life Simplified is about.  Simplifying my life and being grateful for a simple existence.

I love to link up with Maxabella Loves over at Kidspot for 52 Weeks of Grateful.  I feel like it keeps me in check.  Forces me to reflect each week on what has been and look for the good in my life rather than dwell on what might disappoint me.

-x-

I was also blessed this last week to be given a gorgeous book to read, from a couple of lovely ladies.  It's called Simple Abundance.  I know perfect, hey!  But they know that I'm seeking out this path and they knew I would really enjoy this book.

It was actually a thank you, which also shows me that giving to others, helping others when needed, without expectation, reaps it's own reward.

-x-

I believe in Karma, and I've reached a point in my life (call it age if you will) where I believe in being kind to others, I've not always been a kind person, but I accept that my journey is what it is and has helped guide me to where I am today.

Grateful
